Soapstone is a metamorphic rock which consists mostly of the mineral talc. It is a relatively soft stone, a calcium carbonate
It is relatively heavy but brittle (will break if dropped) These have a smooth feeling like you are rubbing a piece of soap hence the name "soap" stone.
Fun fact is that you cannot wash with it and it does not produce suds :)
This stone is mined in the Kisii area in Kenya. Hand tools are used to make all sorts of crafts.
After extraction the pits are refilled and it takes 5-10 years for soapstone to re-form!
